Rainbow Trout

Rainbow Trout: The Naknek River is one of the few rivers in the world that hold wild rainbow trout larger than 30 inches long and is widely regarded at the very top of rainbow rivers in Alaska. It’s the abundance of salmon producing mass nourishment in the form of flesh and eggs that help these trout grow to such magnificence.

Fox Bay Lodge hosts a limited number of trout and char trips per year out of respect for the resource. Days spent rainbow fishing will be from our boat hunting up these migratory trout that flow through the Naknek River. While rainbows are steadily available throughout the summer, to target the big trophy you’ll want to come out in September and October.

Fishing for Rainbow Trout

Arctic Char: These healthy, active and colorful fish are found in abundance and add lots of catching to your rainbow trout fishing trip. Most people prefer to fly fish for rainbows and char to minimize damage to these beautiful catch and release fish. Similarly to rainbow the Arctic Char are available but they really get big from gorging all summer and are in full spawning splendor in September and October.

See the current Alaska Department of Fish & Game regulations for the most up-to-date information.
